Notes from a Veteran Publisher |
|
In 2010, Sun Color Culture Publishing Ltd. celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
During the past twenty years, Sun Color has transformed itself from a
specialized publisher of DIY (Do It Yourself) and handcraft books to a major
general trade publishing group in Taiwan. The changes in Sun Color have
paralleled the changes in my personal life, as the young man I used to be has
matured, and crossed the threshold of fifty. However, some things remain
constant, as when it comes to the publishing business, my partners at work
continue to joke about my restless, even ‘maniac’ state of mind. I am proud to
say that my passion about books has yet to recede; it remains the key with which
I lead, and my team and I are still eager for challenges, just like we were two
decades ago.
Recently I have taken to cycling. I have since discovered that the secrets to a
successful hilltop conquest are exactly those to managing a successful
publishing business: planning, preparation, and perseverance. Even a veteran
cyclist will not know whether the sun will still be shining when he or she
reaches the top of the mountain. However, this uncertainty is also the most
fascinating aspect of both fields. Many people are continually surprised by how
adaptable in action, how exquisite in taste the Sun Color team can be; I
attribute this triumph not to my being particularly clever, but to the fact that
I, starting out as an editor rather than a salesman, never once forgot the
original purposes of publishing—to take great care of the deepest desires of our
readers, to keep in mind that God is in the details, and to never let go of our
passion about books.
Owing to the generous assistance of many over the years, and despite inevitable
setbacks, Sun Color has been progressing with both vigor and prudence, for which
I am very grateful. The world continues to change, and the golden rule of
yesterday might prove a stumbling block to success today. I have always believed
that only change is constant, and it is this simple concept that is responsible
for our continuous growth. Therefore, how to make the best out of the creativity
of every colleague on the Sun Color team via flexible, effective, and
sustainable management, is the core of our company's lasting competitiveness and
my everyday mission.
On the eve before Sun Color welcomes its twentieth anniversary, I want to
express my sincere gratitude to all our colleagues and readers who have
graciously accompanied us on this great journey. You have been the driving force
behind our advancement.
Currently, speculations on e-books development continue to flood the
international book market, filling the future with heavy uncertainty.
Nevertheless, we still believe that a brave new world of publishing is right in
front of us if only we embrace the changes and challenges it provides. As a
major publisher in Taiwan, the outpost of reading and publishing in the Chinese
language, Sun Color is now proud to say that we are ready for the
future.Innovation, professionalism, and passion will continue to be our
commitments to our readers—just as we have done during the past twenty years. |
